Being a good photographer isn't just about taking a great photo. Sure you have to know how to use your equipment, be mindful of lighting and composition, not to mention interacting with your subject to tease out those little moments that make an image shine, but that's only half the process. There are a lot of behind the scenes actions that take place after the shoot to make the images look truly stunning. From editing to Photoshop and everything in between, I spend most of my time as a photographer looking at each and every image to make sure it looks great. Jen and Erik committed to one another during a Wiccan Handfasting Ceremony that took place in a field dappled by beautiful autumn sunlight. During cocktail hour the couple entertained the crowd with a Rock Band duet and I've never seen so many people at a reception head banging to Metallica's Enter Sandman. It was incredibly fun photographing all the unique details of this event. Jen and Erik made their celebration their own and it was definitely worth it.

IDEAS! Bright ideas for dark spaces - Part 1: At the Church

I just recently met with a couple who was concerned about getting good photos in their dark church. This is a common concern of clients and photographers alike. Most churches do not allow flash during the ceremony and most photographers agree that direct flash can be a harsh way to light a portrait. So what do you do when the ceiling is dark, the spotlights dim and that maroon carpet makes it seem like more of a cave than a place of celebration? Here are a few examples of how to find the light in those dark spaces.

while a slow shutter speed brightens the
dim lighting in the church.

One little ray of light was coming in from a
solitary high window so I placed the bride
and groom directly in it's path.

Who says you have to have your portraits
taken on the alter? I took the bride and groom
up to the balcony where the only windows
were located. Natural light fills the foreground
while tungsten light fills the dome.

Don't be afraid of the grain. Sometimes a
high contrast backlit image can give a
beautiful sense of place.

Most churches have spotlights over the alter. As long as you slow
down the shutter to bring in the ambient light, you shouldn't lose
the details in the background.

IDEAS! How to get your kids to sit still for photos

Don't. That's right, I said don't. You can't make a kid sit still if they don't want to and I'm not going to fight with a toddler. I'll lose.

My method for children's portraiture is simple. Find a fun setting with room to run around and play, slip on some comfy shoes and give chase. Occasionally I might say things like "Hey can I take your picture?" or "Can you give Mommy and Daddy a hug?" and I get brief interludes where I can take a somewhat posed portrait. I also encourage parents to bring toys, blankets or treats for a job well done.

At some point your child is going to be finished and that's when the session is over. This could be 20 minutes in or after an hour and a half. I let them determine the length of the shoot. The last thing you want to do is push a cranky child or try to force them to keep going. It only results in tears and screaming, yours and theirs.

The best photos happen when kids are just being themselves. After awhile they forget I'm there and that's when I capture the best moments.

This venue is one of Maryland's hidden gems. Beautiful gardens, historic buildings and a view of the water are just a few of its highlights. I recently met with Jean Shea, the event coordinator, at London Town Historic Gardens and she took me on a tour of the grounds. I was astonished to find I had not even explored a fraction of it's splendors. It is definitely a must-see location if only to enjoy the gardens in bloom on a warm afternoon.

Last night, for the first time, I attended the Cocktails and Connections networking party hosted by the knot. It was held at the Engineers Club in Baltimore and featured some great music, decor and catering from the Baltimore area. Some of the vendors included Amie Decker Beauty, Charm City Cakes, Davinci Florist, E2 Events, MKCatering and Shutter Booth. I made some great contacts, met some old friends and got to just enjoy the ambiance.

BUSINESS! WPPI Convention 2011

As usual the WPPI convention in Las Vegas was inspirational and overwhelming all at the same time. This year I took several masterclasses in addition to the platform classes offered with registration and it was well worth the money.

My inclination every year is to take as many classes as possible but it becomes quickly apparent that this is too exhausting. Las Vegas is exhausting in and of itself. The trade show floor alone takes several hours to peruse and requires several well planned trips. The amount of new products and services each year is incredible and one cannot possibly see them all. Needless to say, I did get to most of the booths I had earmarked and got to say "Hi" to many of the vendors I currently use.

On a personal note, I got to take in more of Vegas than I normally do during the convention and even got to schedule a trip to The Valley of Fire State Park with friends. We saw a Cirque Du Soleil show the last night we were there to finish off the trip.

I'm excited to start implementing some of the ideas and techniques I learned and show of some new sample albums in 2011.

Restaurant 2941 is absolutely one of my favorite places to photograph. It's tucked away in a business park in Falls Church, Virginia and has a wonderful mix of modern architecture, traditional gardens and incredible cuisine. The Restaurant itself has a high ceiling and windows that look out onto a stone patio. The carefully landscaped garden includes a Koi pond, waterfalls and stone pathways.

What a great way to meet other professionals in the industry! The 3rd Annual Blue Martini Party hosted by Blue Sky Films and Chris Laich Music Services was held last night at Eden's rooftop bar in DC. Not only did I get to meet a videographer from Blue Sky that I will be working with in two weeks, but I came home with a wallet full of business cards and some great new contacts. Of course, I had a blue martini or two and the bar was a great setting to mingle, make new friends and swap stories of our wedding adventures.

Owning your own business can be a lonely venture and sometimes we all just need a little inspiration to keep us going. Today a fellow businesswoman shared this quote in our networking meeting and I think it speaks to everyone about striving to be your best.
